Born on the Bayou
2017
Species illustrated: Mexican Free-Tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis)
Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in August 2017. Among the flooded residents of Houston was a colony of 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats living under the Waugh Bridge over Buffalo Bayou. Some escaped the rising waters, some were drowned, and others were rescued by volunteers. It is estimated that this colony consumed two and one half tons of insects per night, providing an important check on disease-carrying mosquitoes.
